Schools That Rock ask a few questions to Storm Rhoda, Deputy Head prefect of Camps Bay High School.
Question: How do you experience the influence of the Covid19 virus on our country?
It has been a very stressful time. The economy has been negatively impacted. Employment has been disrupted. Small to medium businesses have been impacted and although financial institutions and government are supporting with debt relief, there are still a lot of concerns on how things will work in the future. Unemployment is high and impoverished communities are taking strain. Online schooling is difficult, especially for students that don’t have internet access but also difficult because it’s very different from learning in a classroom and requires a lot of discipline.
Question: Do you think the virus will influence future education at schools?
Definitely.
Question: Will schools approach education in a new way?
Schools are working closely with the government but would need to think out of the box to ensure that students are taught in a new and different way as opposed to the traditional teaching methods. The focus will need to be on providing learners and parents with the support and resources to enable meaningful learning opportunities until schools reopen. They will have to ramp up remote learning in order to provide normalcy for students. Funding and technology are areas of concern and this area could impact the education levels for students. Schools are approaching teaching differently but there are some social inequalities that are not conducive to home studying.
Question: How are you planning to still reach your goals for your last year at school?
I have put a daily structured timetable in place and treating each day at if I was going to school. This means getting dressed and getting focused for each subject where time has been set aside. Going through past papers to support my understanding of what I’m learning via Google classes and work provided from my school as well as keeping the channels of communication open with my teachers and tutors so they can assist in supporting me during this time.
Question: What and where are you going to study after school?
Looking at applying at various universities but the first preference would be to study at UCT to obtain a BSC ComSci Degree.
