SA School Athletics Championships. Paul Roos Gymnasium’s athletes walked away with gold, silver and bronze medals at the SA School Athletics Championships.
Paul Roos Gymnasium had 10 athletes representing the Western Cape at the SA School Athletics Championships. The Championship took place from 15 to 18 March and was hosted in Germiston. PRG’s athletes fared very well by obtaining two gold medals, five silver medals and two bronze medals.
On Tuesday 15 March Zak Hickman won the bronze medal in the boys u15 hammer throw. On Wednesday 16 March Handré Nel won the silver medal for the boys u17 pole vault and Joshua Acker won the gold medal for the boys u17 shot put, setting a new SA Schools record of 20.69m. Jonathan Essien qualified for the final of the boys u17 400m while Musahdiq Cornelson ran in the u15 100m heats. John-Oliver Klynsmith took part in the boys u18 shot put final and finished 8th.
On Thursday 17 March Jonathan Essien finished 8th in the boys u17 400m final with a good time of 50,19s. Divan Lamprecht won his u15 300m hurdles heat in a PB time of 39,60 and qualified for the final which was scheduled for the next day. Reuben van der Merwe won the silver medal for the u15 Javelin final with a PB of 60,25m.
Dehan Frylinck won the silver medal in the u19 pole vault final with a height of 4.40m. Wimpie Dörnbrack ended fourth with a height of 4.00m.
Finals
The finals took place on Friday the 18th of March. Zak Hickman finished 8th in the final for boys u15 shot put with a PB of 15.70m. Musahdiq Cornelson won the silver medal in the final for boys u15 long jump with a distance of 6.58m. Musahdiq also took home a gold medal as part of the u15 4x100m relay team. Divan Lamprecht unfortunately fell in the final of boys u15 300m hurdles but showed great character by managing to get up and finish the race. Jonathan Essien ran as part of two relay teams, won a bronze medal as part of the boys u17 mixed relay (400m, 300m, 200m, 100m) as well as a silver medal as part of the boys u19 4×400 relay.
A good feat for PRG athletics.
