‘The true meaning of Easter – according to a Grade 3 class.’ When I first thought about how my learners would respond when I asked them about the meaning of Easter, I didn’t expect much more beyond stories about the Easter Bunny and the importance of eating Easter eggs.
However, I was pleasantly surprised by their answers. The learners confidently told me that the meaning of Easter was to celebrate when God sent his one and only Son to earth to die for our sins so that we could have eternal life.
Some more students added that even when he was on the cross, Christ had already forgiven the people who had crucified him, and that he prayed that the Father would forgive them as they did not know what they had done. Needless to say, I was thoroughly impressed by their answers.
They even knew the details, and told me that although Jesus was put in a tomb that was closed with a giant rock, on the third day He rose from the dead, and later went back to Heaven to be with the Father.
These children have so much knowledge already, and such a genuine desire to learn more – we just need to build on it and challenge it so that they can grow into confident, intelligent individuals.
After all their answers, I asked why we see so many images of the Easter Bunny and Easter eggs, if the true meaning is the crucifixion of Christ. They quickly responded, “Well, Teacher Nicole, eggs symbolize new life and creation, and that’s what Jesus did – He made us pure and holy.”
