Hoofleier 2023.
‘Dis lekker by die huis’
Inspirasie
As ek ‘n kombuis-artkel moes wees, sou ek ‘n ketel wees.
As ‘n nuwe leerder by Hoërskool Bastion instap, ken ten minste vyftien leerders teen pouse jou naam. Jy word ook met ope arms verwelkom. Daar is tonne geleenthede om nuwe talente te ontdek, ongeag jou ouderdom of ervaring. Boonop is alles in Afrikaans.
Head Leader 2023
In our series on schools’ Head Leaders for next year, Schools That Rock talks to Runé Etsebeth. Runé, Head Girl of Bastion High School for 2023, tells us more about herself and her leadership.
“I, Runé Etsebeth, am a daughter, sister, high school learner, leader, friend and also a child of God. Whatever I do, I do with music. As Head Leader of 2023, I will do everything I take on to the best of my ability. Furhermore I will also be an example to my fellow learners and Bastion High School.
I don’t know what the future holds, but my personal goal for 2023 is that I would like to fully enjoy my last year of high school. I also want to make the best of every situation that may come.
Time at school
Since most of the learners, especially our group Grade 11 group, spend the majority of our time at school, I also aim to change the school to ‘it’s nice at home’. I will do this with the help of the leader council and also the teachers. By promoting the symbol of unity and school spirit, it will take us to new heights as an Afrikaans high school.
The biggest challenge I experienced as a learner of Bastion, was to not change myself to fit in with the group. This caused me to have to walk around alone now and then. I wrestled with the question of ‘where do I fit in?’ Now that I have a few years of experience, I have wonderful friends. I keep reminding myself not to fight for anyone or anything.
It’s always so interesting to get to know the wide range of personalities and habits of others around me. Our school is not a macro school. That’s why it stands out to me that the whole school knows each other. You can learn something new from someone, including the teachers, every day.
Inspiration
My parents are my rock and inspiration, but my father is the one who is always ready with advice. He helps me through motivational speeches and putting a whirlwind situation in perspective as I tend to overthink something too much.
If I had to be a kitchen artcle, I’d be a kettle. A kettle is mainly used to boil the water for a nice cup of coffee. In most cases, this leads to energy, endurance, calmness and tranquility. In this way, I motivate others with enthusiasm to stay positive and not give up. Also to relax now and then and remind them that everything will work out as it should.
Although I cannot speak on behalf of my friends about how they would describe me, I treat as I would like to be treated. Their view of me does not determine the way I see myself. I also stand for mutual respect and always try to see the good in someone.
There are many things I aspire to, but the future is so unpredictable. Its unfamiliarity is a great motivator to tackle every day to the fullest. On the other hand, when days get tough, it’s the hope and confidence that good days will come again is my motivation.
Come to Bastion High School
I would advise learners to come to Bastion. When a new learner walks into Bastion High School, at least fifteen learners know your name by break. You are also welcomed with open arms. There are tons of opportunities to discover new talents, no matter your age or experience. Moreover, everything is in Afrikaans. At Bastion, you are a person and not just a number on a class list.
I have respect for all my teachers. Each of them has their own class design, way of doing things and tackling their life. My Afrikaans teacher, Ms E Eksteen, personally inspired me and reminded me of the little things I would like to implement in my life one day.
Right now, for me, the future is filled with unknown possibilities. For now, I want to pass matric next year and tackle everything as it comes. To try to be better every day than I was yesterday.”
