Glenwood’s Aquatic Programme has blossomed over the past 5 years. With national swimming coach Graham Hill at the helm, the swimmers have grown from strength to strength.
The main focus has swung from relay galas to individual events, where the boys’ focus is mainly on international competition. Through the school’s Elite Swimming Programme, the vast majority of the swimmers have made their respective national teams to Junior World Champs, Olympic Junior/Youth Games and Junior/Youth Commonwealth Games. In addition, a number of boys have swum at prestigious international galas over the past 3 years.
In 2017, notable international performances were recorded by several Elite Academy boys.
Tiago Cordeiro became the youngest finalist in the 200m Butterfly “A” Final at the 2017 Mare Nostrum, placing a creditable 6th. School team mate, Kota Karan, placed 7th in the same final. Both boys brought distinction to themselves, their club and their school.
Aryan Makhija, another product of the Elite Swimming Programme, produced a spirited performance in the 2017 Youth Commonwealth Games in Bahamas, claiming a 6th position.
With the national Level 3 gala at the end of the year coming up, many of the young boys will be eyeing qualification for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games as well as the Senior Commonwealth Games.
We look forward to future performances in the pool.
Glenwood’s Waterpolo programme received a boost mid-year 2017 when husband and wife duo, Donn Stewart (Glenwood Old Boy) and Lee-Anne Keets took charge of the 1st team and the Elite Waterpolo Programme. Both athletes are current national players and their expertise is warmly welcomed by Glenwood’s Waterpolo community.
Both Donn and Lee-Anne have taking the reins with enthusiasm and focus and the boys have been hard at work in the polo pit. With the fourth term around the corner and a number of top Waterpolo competitions scheduled for the third term, both boys and coaches have their work cut out for them.
The coaches’ personal achievements have set the bar high for the Glenwood boys. The “green war-cry: stand back for none” will undoubtedly motivate the boys to match, if not surpass, their mentors playing success.
