PIETERMARITZBURG GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL MAKES DOUBLE CLEAN SWEEP IN ANNUAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Enthusiastic supporters and energetic participants were a fantastic combination for the 26th Annual Girls’ Inter-schools Val Fowler Basketball Tournament that took place this weekend, hosted at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High and St John’s DSG indoor sport centres.

The tournament saw the biggest number of participating teams with 16 schools and one basketball academy. All teams participated in the B-Section with 12 of the top schools in the country participating in the A-Section.

Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School continued to dominate basketball with both its 1st and 2nd teams remaining unbeaten in the tournament and both teams going on to win gold in their sections.

The GHS 1st team beat Lereko 46-19, Alexandra 39-3, St Mary’s DSG Pretoria 49-11, Epworth 53-19, St Mary’s DSG Waverly 28-18 in the pool games. They went on to beat St John’s DSG in the semi-finals 28-19 and St Mary’s DSG Waverly in the finals 26-17.

Since its inception, GHS has won this tournament 22 times.

The award for the most assists that lead to baskets from Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High 1st team went to Luthando Goba.

Player of the Tournament voted for by the coaches went to Karabo Tshefa of Lereko High School.
