Curro Hazeldean. In our series on schools’ head leaders for 2023, Schools That Rock chat to Mashile Matsebatlela. Mashile, Head Boy of Curro Hazeldean High School for 2023, tells us more about himself and his leadership.
“I am a rugby player and I love drawing and playing the piano in my free time. I see myself as a leader that is an active listener, empathetic, patient and reliable. Following this, I do also work very well with people, so I also consider myself to be a team worker. While communication skills help me to be a good leader, holding myself accountable is essential to leading by example.
My personal goal for next year is to simply find a balance between my school work and rugby because I would love to study physiology and play rugby professionally.
It is extremely hard to improve a school that is already great. One thing that I would love to push for during my term of service, is to inspire mass participation. There is a lot of great potential that is not being utilised at schools, but if we can push students to work hard in developing their talents, we can all achieve great things.
Biggest challenge
My biggest challenges as a learner at Curro Hazeldean, would have to be how I never have time due to me always wanting to be a part of many different activities. That is something I will need to work on.
What stands out to me at Curro Hazeldeane, is how all of our students are so united even though we are so diverse and come from completely different backgrounds. It is just astonishing to me because it is something I have never witnessed before.
I am someone who prefers to inspire myself, simply because I do not want to be dependent or rely on others for any sort of motivation. Furthermore I want to be able to motivate myself into tapping into my strengths and achieving my goals, no matter the situation. I also want to be able to work on my weaknesses and not let them hinder any of my plans. My parents and coach are the people I turn to when I need any sort of guidance.
If I was a kitchen article, I would be a blender. I am someone that can be fed many different ingredients (ideas), blend them together and produce excellent results.
Energetic and funny
My friends would describe me as someone who is very energetic and funny. On the other hand I can become very serious when need be. They would say I am someone who is very motivated and always on a mission to accomplish all my goals.
What motivates me to achieve my goals are all the people that have supported me and continue to support me. I will forever be grateful and I will show my gratitude by achieving everything that they have expected from me and more.
I would advise learners to become a part of my school because Curro Hazeldean is not only a school. It is also the home of excellence. This school will push you to become the best version of yourself and will also push you to achieve great things.
I am not a fan of picking favourites. Nevertheless, I have to say my two favourite teachers would have to be Mr Du Plooy and Mr Swart. Even though Mr Swart is no longer a teacher at Curro. I would not be where I am today if it was not for those two amazing teachers. They have honestly changed my life for the better. Everything I do to this day is to show them that they did not make a mistake by believing in me.
I have very big plans for the future, but it all begins now. I would love to be a professional rugby player. On the other hand, most sports careers do not last that long, so I would also love to study sports physiology so I could continue to be a part of the sports community.
