Curro Hazeldean. In our series on schools’ head leaders for 2023, Schools That Rock chat to Amy Mulle. Amy, Head Girl of Curro Hazeldean High School for 2023, tells us more about herself and her leadership.
“I believe that trust is earned, respect is given and loyalty is demonstrated. My goal have always been to lead and inspire students to perform their best and achieve their goals. I did this through relationship building, being passionate about motivating each one to strive to be the best they can be and also influencing those around me. I am the first one to realise that change starts within me in order to be effective in influencing others. My parents instilled in me principles that I live by which is to live authentically. I also care for others and grow continuously through hard work and perseverance. In 2023 I hope to serve with humility and to be a part in a positive change in Curro Hazeldean College.
My personal goals for next year is first and foremost, that I would like to guide our leadership team. I will guide the team by listening to the needs and implement positive change in our school. Our society is constantly changing. I believe you need to adapt a positive attitude and outlook to the change in order to secure a successful outcome. Personally I would like to develop as an individual to graduate with academic success. Furthermore I want to continue my sporting career by persisting and giving my best with training sessions in order to reach my ultimate goals of improving my own personal best times. If there is opportunity I would also like to develop my communication skills as I believe this is a skill that will benefit you in all aspects of your life.
Goals for my term
My goals for my term of service at Curro Hazeldean, I would like to build and sustain reciprocal family and community partnerships. I want to leverage those partnerships to cultivate inclusive, caring and culturally responsive school community. By building these community networks, I would like to develop trust throughout the Hazy community. Furthermore I would like to build a sense of transparency and shared purpose. This will expand to parents, staff, community members and students. This can be achieved by listening to the needs of each student and parent. Then I want to implement projects that will make a real difference in the school. This will include developing more advanced “sporting curriculum.” Following this, roll-out impactful community projects to make a difference in the underprivileged communities outside and inside the school.
I would also like to motivate to create an environment where parents and community members would like to form an active part of the Hazie community. This may be reached by creating refreshment areas that are friendly, inviting and deliver an excellent service. An example of this project is a permanent Barista and cafe environment with friendly staff and healthy snacks or meals. Ultimately our environment is a mirror of our attitudes and expectations. This in turn will help us to create unity within our diverse community.
Biggest challenge
As a learner of Curro, my biggest challenge was to have my voice heard. Therefore I would also like to encourage openness and transparency to voice our opinions, not only to be heard, but to be actioned upon.
What stands out most to me of Curro Hazeldean, is that all the learners have a bond. This bond you will seldom find in any other school. We are a family. If we must work, we all work together and encourage each other to reach our ultimate goal. The teachers are also encouraging and always available to help if it is necessary.
Inspiration comes from many forms and has many faces. Some leaders are truly inspirational and well-respected because of their natural flair to innovate, empower and influence others to act in meaningful ways and ultimately change the world. For that reason, I view Nelson Mandela’s journey as a true inspiration to the new diverse nation. I value his patience and perspective to use as a driving force in Curro Hazeldean in unifying our school embracing our diversity and respecting our individuality.”
Kitchen article
You’re a kitchen article. Who are you and why? “If I could choose a utensil, it would be a measuring cup. A measuring cup is consistent and reliable, and it is useful in any situation. I think it echo’s my personality of being very precise with my work. I am also very reliable if you need a task to be performed.
If my friends will describe me, I think they will use describing words like fun, live wire, loyal and persistent. Other words that they often use to describe my personality is pedantic and thorough with a gentle heart. Always willing to help and always trying to keep an objective perspective in a difficult situation.
The gratification of overcoming obstacles in reaching a specific goal, is one of my greatest motivators. The sense of accomplishment that comes with mastering difficult goals is priceless.
Become part of Curro Hazeldean
I would advise learners to become part of Curro Hazeldean because it is a small school with strong Christian Values. We value each individual and strive to create an environment of belonging. We also embrace and learn from many diverse people and cultures. Academically we offer the best education with many alterative online options to support students where support is needed.
Each teacher that I have in Curro has encouraged me to develop certain skills for which I am thankful. Therefore I can unfortunately not chose one. Each and every single teacher that I have crossed paths with through my high school career, has taught me a vital skill.
My short-term goal is to embrace my last year at Curro Hazeldean as a student and as a leader. I would like to optimize my learning opportunities. I would also like to learn and develop my skills by using resources available and interacting with my fellow-students, council members and teachers.
My long-term goal will be to study abroad to widen my horizons and creating opportunities through my studies to grow as an individual and make a success of my career.
