While Filmit judges (Suidooster actors) were selecting the twenty best film concepts and schools to move on to the final round, Paul Roos Gymnasium was working hard on the compilation and production of an educational mentorship video wherein specialists in the film and TV industry share their knowledge and experience.

Mr Opperman (Head of Drama at Paul Roos) and director of photography and editor Johannes Pieter Nel presented this video. Other industry experts such as Neil Sandilands (actor), Louis Pretorius (screenwriter), Fahema Hendricks (director of photography), Lloyd O’Connor (sound engineer), Eva du Preez (editor), Michael Botha (audio engineer) and Braam du Toit (composer) filmed and recorded inserts which were included in the Filmit video. The video is 1 hour and 40 minutes long and covers topics within the pre-production, production and post-production phases of the film making process and the vocations withing the industry. It is a wonderful source of information and inspiration for any learner with an interest in film making.

The video has been uploaded to YouTube. A private link was shared with all 35 schools who entered the competition – irrespective of whether they moved on to the final round or not. Filmit is a plough-back initiative aimed at sharing free educational material regarding the various professions in the TV and film industries and valuable tips on film making within these vocations.

Suidooster actors step up to mentor the youth

The twenty schools who moved on to the final round will receive exclusive one-on-one online mentorship via Zoom with one of 5 actors from the TV soap opera Suidooster. The mentorship sessions start in August (4-13 August) and continue till early September.  Suidooster actors Esther von Waltsleben, Dean Smith, Marco Spaumer, Jawaahier Petersen en Eden Classens are allocated to four schools each. All actors will dedicate one mentoring session per school in August, followed by a second session early-September. They will provide guidance around important aspects such as pre-production and the successful activation of the production phase.

Congratulations to the following school groups for making it to the next round!
