World of Processed Foods. At Grantleigh School, Richardts Bay, Grade 6 students recently took part in an exciting and interactive learning experience that blended practical skills with creative thinking. The class delved into the topic of processed foods, taking their knowledge beyond textbooks and applying it in real-world scenarios.
In groups, students were tasked with choosing a food item to process at home. They then worked together to create a detailed PowerPoint presentation showcasing their food processing techniques and explaining their findings. The project culminated in a unique tasting session, where students presented their homemade processed foods for their classmates to enjoy.
Some of the impressive creations included Italian sausage, boerewors, cake pops, dried fruit, biltong, and cupcakes. Each group not only learned valuable food processing techniques but also had the opportunity to share the fruits of their labour with their peers. The hands-on project was both educational and fun, as students eagerly tasted the different items and discussed the various methods involved in making them.
At Grantleigh, students don’t just learn—they experience. And in this case, they learned a lot about food processing while enjoying delicious, homemade treats. Bon appétit!
