St John’s Easter Rugby. Paul Roos Gymnasium’s first team performed exceptionally well at the St John’s College Easter Rugby Festival. The festival was held in Johannesburg from 14 to 18 April 2022.
The first match took place on 14 April. Paul Roos Gymnasium put in a great performance to sweep past a resilient Welkom Gimnasium 50-6. The first half saw Paul Roos enjoying the possession with their fast-paced attack, often looking to run Welkom off their feet. Two quick tries from Paul Roos saw Welkom really struggle with the tempo of the game as the half progressed. The second half belonged to Paul Roos. They unleashed their elusive backline, who often showed great footwork and pace to race over the gain line. The backline combined well with the forwards to produce a convincing 50-6 victory. Winger, Luke Graham, and the team’s flanker and captain, Herman Lourens, had a huge impact on securing the victory.
On Saturday, 16 April, Paul Roos Gymnasium raked in another convincing win at the St John’s Easter Rugby over Hoërskool Nelspruit with a 40-3 victory. The loosehead prop, Wilbur Loubser, managed to score two tries and kept the pressure on Nelspruit’s forwards throughout the game.
Paul Roos Gymnasium will be hosting its first home-ground fixture since 2019 against Bishops this coming weekend. Hockey matches are scheduled for Friday, 22 April at Maties Astro. Rugby fixtures will take place on Saturday, 23 April, at the Markötter Sports Complex.
