Earlier this week, Old Unionite Mr. Walter Murray, honoured Union High School with the Springbok blazer he wore while representing South Africa at the 1975 World Moving Target Games in Munich, Germany.
The blazer will be added to the school’s archives and will form part of the display of special memorabilia at the school.
Mr. Murray has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in clay shooting and is considered quite a legend by the South African Clay Shooting world.
Mr. Murray captained the Springbok and SA teams for nine years, and if one counts only first places in National and Provincial Shoots he has received the following:
- SA and Provincial High Guns – 13 (these ceased to be awarded in about 1975).
- In 3 competitions with a record of 146/150, and in 4 competitions 190/200.
- Trap D.T.L. – 7
- Trap Doubles – 8 (Mr. Murray still holds the SA record of 98/100)
- Olympic Trap – 1
- Sporting – 1
- Olympic Skeet and E/Skeet and USA/Skeet – 54.
He was also awarded Shooter of the Year in 1973 and in 1978 The State President’s Award for Service to Clay Target Shooting.
Union High School is delighted to accept this unique artefact which we will treasure for many years to come.
