Schools Cricket – Kearsney College vs Durban High School

Schools Cricket. On Saturday, 25 January, Kearsney College hosted a powerful DHS side. Durban High won the toss and elected to bat first.

DHS struck early, removing Kearsney captain Jason de Gryse through the impressive Taine Havermann who picked up four wickets.  Rivan Moodley steadied the ship with 34. Aaron Blackburn also contributed an important 29 runs. Furthermore the best batter of the day was the youngster Asher Hollister who made an impressive 54 runs.

The batsmen were certainly tested through DHS’ outstanding paceman Bayanda Majola, who represented the SA U19 Emerging Team in 2024. Majola finished with 5/25 in his 10 overs.

The hosts were bowled out for 166 in 45 overs. 

This young Kearsney team were outstanding with the ball. Litha Gonya removed the key wicket of Ismaeel Omar in the first over, to give the hosts some hope that an upset could be on the cards. Taine Havemann and Akthar Basha then took the score to 45/1 before Daniel Miskey removed Havemann.

Josh van Biljon, one of the form players for the recent Cubs Week, then came to the middle and immediately looked calm and went about his business rotating strike at ease. The pressure exerted from all of Kearsney’s bowlers never let the visitors settle, from the cunning leg spin of Rivan Moodley 3/24, to the consistent seam bowling of Daniel Miskey 2/14 and Bonga Maphanga 2/20. 

It finally took an incredible ball from Matthew Gorrie to remove Van Biljon and leave DHS reeling at 92/7. Despite a rearguard effort from Dhilan Naraidu of 19 runs, DHS were eventually bowled out for 134, to hand Kearsney an impressive 32-run victory.
