schoolsthatrockProvincial Karate Championships. On 11 February the Mpumalanga Karate Association held the annual Provincial Karate Championships. It took place at the Gert Sibande District Municipality, within the Mayoral Parlour. It was the first time the event was held in Ermelo in more than ten years. Even though it was a cold start to the morning, the hall was soon filled with the fiery shouts of ‘kiai!’ That is Japanese for “Kry vir jou!”) That came from the young participants as well as those a bit more advanced in age.
The occasion was opened by the Mpumalanga Member of Executive Council (MEC) for the Department of Sports, Culture and Recreation, the Honourable BT Shongwe.It was followed by four grade 12 learners from Hoërskool Ermelo, Isabelle Moussier, Yoliswa Ndlangamandla, Jessica van Niekerk and Nqobile Zwane performing the National Anthem. It took place in a hall of serious faces in white pyjamas paired with an assortment of colourful belts.
