Point High Head Girl. It is a privilege for Schools That Rock to ask a few questions to Handri Viljoen, Point High School Mossel Bay, Head Girl for 2022.
Handri, how do you see your role as head leader of your school?
I am very privileged to be able to work with a strong group of young leaders. This include our committee members, our RCL as well as our prefects of 2022. My role as head girl cannot be fulfilled without each and every one of these people by my side.
How did the past four years at Point High School prepare you for your role as leader?
Point High School has an incredible group of leaders. You enter the school as a “Gorrie” and you can already be a leader in the grade 8 committee. From the moment you enter the school, your leadership abilities are developed and your voice is heard. These committees, educators and learners involved contributed to my preparation for this role.
Who do you look to for inspiration and mentoring?
Mr. Dames and the Milkwood family have been a continuous support to me during my high school years. I believe the lessons I have learnt there have stayed with me and made me grow into the leader I am today. Someone special once said that your attitude determines your altitude. I have always kept that close to my heart. There are many people who I draw inspiration from but I think that I mostly aspire to lead the way Jesus did.
Which field of study do you intend pursuing after school?
Like many of my fellow grade 11 learners, I am still absolutely clueless about my studies after school. My options are worlds apart ranging from microbiology and pathology to music composition and fashion design.
Which characteristic (i.e. sport, culture or academic) of Point High School do you feel is most prominent?
Exaltis in altiora or “van hoog na hoër” is something that makes Point High different from other schools. This is a saying we live by and we strive to achieve. Point High school is a family and there is a place for everyone. We are a school based on the principle of improving and we accomodate each individual’s growth so that they may achieve their own hights.
Do you think participation in sport should be made compulsory in schools?
Sport is beneficial to the body and mind especially for children. I believe sport should be compulsory in primary schools as it teaches young children those first lessons of leadership and how to work as a team. However, as a learner develops overtime and finds his or her passions and talents, they should be given the choice to which extra carricular activity they want to belong. Those who excel in music should be able to partake in choir or orchestra instead of being forced to play a sport they do not enjoy. While those who enjoy acting and the finer arts should be able to join a drama or a photography club instead. I do not believe sport should be made compulsory in high schools, however i believe participation in your chosen field should.
What did you enjoy most during your school career?
I really enjoyed being part of our school’s community service committee, HYPI, specifically the CANSA organisation. I enjoyed being able to work with people who have a heart of service and a hand of giving. Being part of our grade 11, social community was a true honour. This year we had a clothing project and we were able to help a lot of families alongside the Heart-2-Heart organisation.
What are your objectives as head leader of your school?
I want to be a leader that serves. That is my primary goal. I want to serve the way Jesus did; he fed the hungry and he washed his disciples feet. Galatians 5:13 says that we should serve one another in love and that is what I hope for Point High School in the year 2022. Galatians 5:13 says that we should serve one another in love and that is what I hope for Point High School in the year 2022.
What motivates you to reach your goals?
Knowing that I have the ability to do all things through Christ who strengthens me is my daily motivation to work towards my dreams and goal. I know that I am capable of anything if I believe in myself and the abilities that the Lord gave me.
Why would you encourage learners to become part of your school?
There are many reasons why I’d recommend Point to learners but mostly because Point High school has developed and is continually developing into a school that will leave a prominent mark in the community. With a foundation of discipline, integrity and strong values, Point High is becoming the school that every learner wants to be in.
What are your future goals/ambitions?
I hope to be the best version of myself and to use the gifts and talents that the Lord gave me to the best of my ability.
