Head Boys 2023. In our series on schools’ Head Boys 2023, Schools That Rock chat with Xander Delly. Xander, Head Boy for 2023 of Waterstone College, tells us more about himself and his leadership.
“I am Xander Delly and I’m 18 years old. I am a student at Waterstone College, Johannesburg, and in grade 11. My hobbies include reading of science fiction novels, drawing and playing soccer. My leadership style involves me listening to what others have to say first before I give my opinion, input or provide solutions to those in need of my assistance. I’m also the type of person who puts others’ needs before my own. I also have respect for everyone I know as well as people I don’t know.
My personal goal for 2023 to achieve more than 4 academic distinctions by the end of the year. I also want to play first team soccer and to be selected to play for the Curro Cup soccer squad. Furthermore I want to achieve full colours for academics and work towards half colours for soccer.
My goals, as Head Boy 2023 for my school, would be to unify both the students and teachers. Not only through school events but also throughout the academic year. I want to reach that through various programs that will help solidify the relationships between learners and teachers. I would also love to implement new initiatives for students to be more active in school and to take part in school activities and programs. Along with also encourage learners to come up with new initiatives that other learners would be interested in doing.
Challenges
The biggest challenges as a learner for me was handing in tasks, assignments and as well as projects on time. Another challenge I faced as a learner was getting myself to get out of my comfort zone and do things that I was too scared to do or do things I was never able to do.
What stands out the most for me at Waterstone College, is the amount of diversity my school has, in terms of race, religion and culture. Apart from this, the amount of hard-working people who can achieve such great accolades at such young ages.
I don’t only look up to God for inspiration and mentorship, but I also look up to both my parents, my brothers, family and friends for inspiration.
If I had to be a kitchen article, I would be a stove. The reason for, because sometimes I would need to be hot and boiling when a situation needs a quick response or solution. Other times I would have to be simmering like a pot when things need to be slowed down and for things or situations to be dealt with slowly and precisely.
My friends would describe me as being an ambivert. Someone who is generally quiet at times, very respectful, funny and a very helpful person.
Motivation
People that motivate me to achieve my goals are the people I surround myself with. The people who continuously motivate me to be the best version of myself. I am motivated by each day that comes to make a difference in the world.
As Head Boy 2023, I would advise learners to become part of my school because it will help build relationships with their peers. It will also build up their confidence to try out new and exciting things.
My favourite teacher is Mrs Watkins. She is like a second mother to me. She helps me out when I’m in need of assistance and pushes me to do more and become better. Whenever I am feeling down Mrs Watkins always finds a way to make me feel better.
My future goals are to become a professional Architect and Graphic Designer. To become the CEO of my own business and to provide opportunities to the less fortunate.
