The 2018 South African Junior Chess Championships took place from the 15th to the 24th of December in Johannesburg. Glenwood High School had two learners that represented KwaZulu-Natal at the tournament:
Chad Blomeyer – U18A
Kuvam Pillay – U14A
Chad Blomeyer scored 5.5 points out of 7 securing the board prize. A board prize goes to the player that gets the highest score from all players on that specific team position.
Kuvam Pillay scored 4 points of 7.
Chad Blomeyer also competed in the National Wildcard Tournament. He finished tied 2nd, but final position was 7th due to tiebreak. Chad has now qualified to compete in the South African Junior Closed Chess Championships, to be held in the March school vacation.
This tournament hosts the best 30 players in the country per age group that compete for the honours of representing the country.
Mr Divesh Sookdeo was appointed as the national team manager for the African Juniors (U20) Championship that was held in Uganda from the 28th of December to the 6th of January. South Africa finished as the best country with 1 Gold and 1 Silver.
