Easter Shaka Soccer Tournament. Between Friday, 15 April and Sunday 17 April, another successful Easter Shaka Soccer Tournament was held at Curro Academy Soshanguve in Pretoria. The winning team took home R50,000 in prize money.
For the second time this year, the annual tournament was held at Curro Academy Soshanguve. The school’s Executive Head, Dr. Sebolela, agreed to partner with Mr. Tshepo Letjane, Director of the non-profit Easter Shaka Soccer organisation in 2021.
This year more than 600 male and female competitors from across the community of Soshanguve took part. The participants ranging from children under 14 to adults under 30. Together, they formed 32 teams of 11 players. Matches took place at the school as well as the Shaka Stadium and The Philip Stadium. The tantalizing final was between Chillie Boys FC and Ben Chilla. The final took place at the Giant Stadium in Tshwane on Sunday, 17 April.
Chillie Boys FC
After a ferocious battle, Chillie Boys FC triumphed, taking home the trophy and R 50 000. The runners up, Ben Chillas was awarded R25 000 and third place Corona FC receiving R10 000 in prize money. Every team that participated also received brand new soccer kits.
“It has been a privilege and honour to be part of yet another Easter Shaka Soccer Tournament. As the school, we are incredibly proud of our under 17 boys team, who got to the finals in their category. Although our under 13 and under 14 boys’ teams didn’t make it to the finals, they also played very well. We are extremely proud of them. This tournament is not just about playing soccer and winning money. It is about our community coming together to celebrate the skills, passion, and commitment of those who took part. We are incredibly pleased to be able to play a central role in this,” says Dr. Fannie Sebolela, Executive Head at Curro Academy Soshanguve.
As a non-profitable organisation, The Shaka Easter Soccer Tournament began in 2021. It undoubtedly aims to use sports, like soccer, to help improve nation-building and social cohesion within local communities. Easter Shaka Soccer hope the prize money will be used to develop skills and create much-needed jobs within the wider area. Also reduce substance abuse and high levels of crime which are prevalent in the Soshanguve region.
