Curro Thatchfield. It is a priviledge for Schools That Rock to ask a few questions to Tendani Nemudivhiso, SRC Vice President 2022, from Curro Thatchfield High School in Centurion, Gauteng.
Tendani, how do you see your role as head leader of Curro Thatchfield High School?
I see my role as vice president at Curro Thatchfield as an opportunity to assist in reinforcing the core values of our school to our learners. I also see my role as common ground between school management and the learners. It is important that I represent their views and ideas fairly in order to improve their overall school experience.
Do you think the measures taken by the government in respect of Covid-19 for schools are justified?
Due to the light-hearted nature of our country, the strict approach in terms of constant temperature recording, sanitising and social distancing was the best way to tackle the issue or else many institutions wouldn’t have taken it as serious.
Who do you look to for inspiration and mentorship?
I look to many of the successful and independent female teachers at my school. Specifically, Ms Bambo, a Life Sciences teacher who has taken her career as an opportunity to provide a safe space for her learners and to offer non-judgemental guidance. She is also a teacher who understands how to communicate with her learners and seems to enjoy what she does.
Which field of study do you intend pursuing after school?
I intend on pursuing a career in actuarial science.
Do you think that South African schools offer you sufficient opportunities for the field of study you intend to pursue? Why?
Yes, since actuarial science is a field taken by people who are naturally gifted in Mathematics, many schools – like mine – have offered their students different opportunities to strengthen that gift such as AP Mathematics.
Do you think participation in sport should be made compulsory in schools?
It honestly depends on the field you want to pursue. I’ve heard of many learners who decide to stop doing sports in order to focus on their studies and I believe they shouldn’t be disadvantaged because of it. The practical aspect of Life Orientation should cover that participation.
What did you enjoy most during your school career?
I enjoyed seeing my fellow classmates and peers develop into strong men and women who are essentially the future leaders of our country. Being a part of someone’s coming-of-age experience while you go through yours is so comforting because we know we are not alone in our discomfort or uncertainty.
Are you 100% sure of the field of study you contemplate pursuing after school? Please explain your answer.
Yes, at the end of Grade 9, when I had to choose my subjects, I based them on what I enjoyed doing and I chose a career based on the subjects I chose. So not only is it a field that caters to my strengths, it also involves my favourite parts of school.
Which University will you attend ?
Preferably, the University of Witwatersrand or the University of Cape Town.
