Cricket Captains. During the next few weeks Schools That Rock will be chatting to 1st team cricket captains from schools across South Africa. Our seventh ball is bowled at Zayne Bux, cricket captain of Glenwood High School in Durban.
“I started playing cricket at the early age of nine. The reason I like cricket, is because it challenges me and I enjoy playing it more than any other sport.
My first experience on the cricket field was good but challenging because we played against people who really knew how to play and we were just a development side who couldn’t really play at the time. The difficulties that I faced when I started playing cricket was that sometimes I couldn’t go to matches because of not having transport money and I didn’t have a kit to use, so I always had to borrow from other players.
First experience
My first experience as a cricket captain was in 2015. I was appointed as a development Elite U/11 Captain which participated in the kearsney festival in the same year. Asking me which qualities a good cricketer should have, I would say a strong character, discipline and a lot of determination. The biggest task of the captain is to lead by example. He also has to push other players to be on their best at every game.
Our 1st team have three training sessions a week.
I would say that the key to success on the cricket field is to play hard and play the best in the conditions on the day. I consider my family as my inspiration for playing cricket. My model cricketer is, without a doubt, Quinton de Kock.
The thing that inspires me most is that when I look back at my past and see how far I’ve come till this day. I prefer batting to bowling because its a bit more challenging and I like to be challenged so that I can improve. My favourite batting shot is a reverse sweep. The best bowler our team played against so far is Lutendo Tsanwani(DHS).
Most memorable match
The most memorable match I played was against Selborne College at the Grey P.E festival 2022. We had a young team and we played against a strong, undefeated Selborne College side which was a tough game. They under estimated our young side but we sticked together as a team. We played hard cricket, fought for our school badge and managed to get a good win under pressure!
I manage stress on and off the field by trying to stay calm and do the best within my ability. In difficult times on the field, I seek advice from my team mates and from coach (Mr Bux) who can pass a message to a person who is at the boundary.
My advice to newcomers is to make the most of it while you are at Glenwood. You only go through high school once. Make sure you have no regrets and grab every opportunity that comes your way with both hands. The two players in our team who always surprise me on the field are Kyle Brian and Bandile Mbatha.
Pre-match ritual
Do we have a pre-match ritual we follow? Yes, I do shadow batting of my inning on the night before game day. Like in any team, we also have an entertainer in oir team – Cameron Laing.
I enjoy watching test match cricket on television because I learn from listening to commentary on how the professionals execute their plans, the way they apply themselves on long format and how they bat under pressure. The cricket coach who taught me how to play cricket, is Mkhuliseni Shozi and I am currently with Mr Bux at school.
My future cricket plans? I’m looking to play cricket at a high level and study Sport Administration.
During my free time, I train cricket with my friends, Play games and study.
Describe yourself in one word – Hardworker.
