Ash Wednesday. It has become a St Andrew’s tradition on Ash Wednesday to burn a wooden stick. On it, the girls write all the things that hold them back: sins that separate us from God and from one another, pain, fears and worries.Throwing it into the fire helps them to let go. It is an action that is also a prayer.
Although Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent, which is the preparation time for Easter, the fire and sticks are not specifically Christian. Everyone can participate and the action can symbolise a new start for everyone. This takes place in the designated chapel services.
The Intersen Phase girls of St Andrew’s School for Girls, Bedfordview, attended a beautiful Service in the Chapel. The girls then threw their sticks in the fire as they quietly walked back to class and they reflected on Lent and the meaning of Ash Wednesday.
