African Athletic Championships. Bronze Glory for Nicola van der Merwe at African Championships!
Rhenish Girls’ High School’s rising star, Nicola van der Merwe, has clinched a bronze medal in the U18 javelin throw at the prestigious CAA African U18/U20 Athletics Championships, held in Abeokuta, Nigeria from 16–20 July 2025.
Competing against top youth athletes from across the continent, Nicola delivered a powerful performance that earned her a spot on the podium. Nicola showcased her talent and determination on an international stage. Her achievement is especially impressive considering the scale of the event, which featured over 700 athletes from 43 African nations.
Nicola was part of South Africa’s 70-member team, selected based on performances at the national championships earlier this year. She represented the Boland Athletics region, and her inclusion in the squad was a testament to her consistency and competitive edge.
📈 Personal Best: Nicola’s top recorded throw is 50.93m with the 500g javelin, achieved in Cape Town in February 2024. This is a mark that places her among the continent’s elite in her age group.
This bronze medal not only celebrates Nicola’s hard work but also adds to South Africa’s growing medal tally at the championships, reinforcing the nation’s reputation as a powerhouse in youth athletics.
Well done, Nicola! Your dedication and excellence continue to inspire young athletes across South Africa. Rhenish Girls’ High School and the entire Western Cape community are incredibly proud of you!
