On Friday evening two ex learners of Northern Cape High School, Reeza Hendricks (2007) and Gihahn Cloete (2010), walked out to open the batting for the Proteas in a T20 International against Pakistan.
Both of these players (Reeza Jozi Stars and Gihahn Tswane Spartans) were also among the top performers in the recent Mzansi Super League. Another ex learner, Patrick Kruger, also played in this tournament for the Paarl Rocks.
The first cricket team was also in action and once again proved why they are best T20 team in the province as they won the Coca-Cola T20 provincial schools competition.
Due to heavy rain the playoff matches scheduled for Saturday, could not take place and the quarter finals had to be decided through a bowl out in the indoor centre. The bowl out went into sudden death and the NCH captain, Joshua Barends, hit the stumps on his delivery to win it for his side. On Sunday they played against Kalahari High School in the semi-final.
NCH batted first and put up a score of 135/8 in their 20 overs. Kalahari in return could only manage 87/9. Later that afternoon the final was played against HC Rose HUB. Through a brilliant knock by Ethene Kruger (60 of 20 balls) and good all round batting by the rest of the batsmen, NCH posted a total of 202/8.
Austin Brooker took charge with the ball and took a brilliant 7-wicket haul to bowl HC Rose HUB out for only 14 runs.
This is the 10th consecutive year that NCH have won the T20 provincial competition.
They will now play against the Free State winner in the Knights-franchise final on 8 March.
