United Space School – Hilton College learner represent SA

United Space School. Hilton College is thrilled to announce that Grade 11 learner William Segar has been selected to represent South Africa at the United Space School (USS) at NASA in Houston, USA, later this year.

William is the third Hilton College boy in four years to be selected to represent South Africa at this prestigious programme. The USS takes only two students per country.

The United Space School is an annual inter-disciplinary programme which takes place during July and August over two weeks. Up to 50 students from 25 countries take part by invitation. Under the mentorship of engineers, scientists and leaders in the aerospace industry, the students design their own mission to Mars.

Mathematics and physical science

Students are selected based on excellence in mathematics and physical science as well as a strong interest in space-related science and activities.

Dr Alexei du Bois, Hilton College’s Director of Academics, described William as a “one-of-a-kind academic”. “From his first day at Hilton College, William has sought to challenge himself far beyond the curriculum. He has self-studied a range of IGCSE and AS-Level qualifications, from entrepreneurship to law. This he did in addition to his full load of IEB classes. It happened all whilst completing his Presidents Award and writing award-winning poetry. His selection is indicative of his talents as an outstanding thinker and scientist,” Du Bois said.

Young scientists

He was also glowing in his praise of the Hilton College Science Department. “It offers an outstanding mix of aspirational opportunities for young scientists on our campus and across the world, from hosting some of the world’s best scientists to placing our boys in programmes at NASA, MIT and Oxford. When combined with world-class teaching and a foundational belief that every Hilton boy has the potential to solve some of the world’s most complex scientific problems, we offer a science programme that inspires Hilton boys to excel.” Clifton Prep School Nottingham Road
