Earlier this year, Union Preparatory School’s Grade 4’s decided to initiate a special project, with which they hoped to give back to the community by making the holidays a little bit merrier for the elderly residents of Graaff-Reinet.
Their idea was to make special care packages that would be delivered over Christmas to the seniors currently being cared for by the Camdeboo Hospice.
To raise the funds needed for the boxes, the Grade 4’s started planning a Pancake Day at the school.
After raising the money needed for the pancakes’ ingredients with a civvies day, the Grade 4s (assisted by their amazing moms) then sold hundreds of pancakes to the entire school community.
This very successful morning managed to raise R4 000 in aid of the learners’ Christmas box project.
As their aim was to fill 50 shoe boxes, the next couple of months were spent collecting enough boxes.
With the generous assistance of Pick n Pay – who went above and beyond what was asked of them when the school contacted them to help with the purchasing of all the items needed for the boxes – the boxes were then stocked with a variety of goodies.
[Pick n Pay even donated cookies and soup packets for each and every box.]
The Grade 4 learners’ last few days at school this term were spent carefully wrapping up each box in festive paper. The 50 beautifully decorated boxes were presented to Loretta Wiehahn and Colleen Buckle of the Camdeboo Hospice earlier today (Thursday, 21 November).
The wonderful team at Camdeboo Hospice will now ensure that each box goes to an elderly resident of Graaff-Reinet in need.
Union Preparatory School would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Cheryl Waddelow of Pick n Pay Graaff-Reinet for their wonderful support and assistance with this project. It is immensely appreciated!
A special word of thanks is also extended to each and every parent and member of the community who helped the Grade 4s spread holiday cheer to some of our local senior citizens!
This project has certainly taught the Grade 4’s a valuable lesson in giving back to their community.
