By necessity, 2020 will be a matric year like no other.
Although it is also an immensely stressful time for the learners of Grade R right through to 11, the young people in their final year of school will be feeling the challenges of this pandemic in a unique way.
On the cusp of putting their school days behind them and entering into a new world where they carve out their futures as adults, they now find themselves in an unprecedented situation where they are under immense pressure academically, all while being unable to savour and enjoy their last few months at school – the months that many consider the most memorable.
Like many other schools, Union has endeavoured to create some kind of academic continuity for these learners through online education – and, in true form, our matrics have risen to the occasion. But, if there’s one thing this year has taught us, it’s that there will be choices, twists and turns in your path, and a lot of that path won’t be anything like you imagined.
That’s one of the beautiful things about life. Sometimes things will work out exactly as you thought, and sometimes things will be different. It’s in the unexpected that the magic happens so take notice of your disappointments – they are often opportunities disguised as something else.
We’d like to challenge our matrics to give it everything they’ve got these next few months and to know that whatever happens next, they’ve got what it takes to achieve the best possible Matric results.
You owe it to yourself to work hard and do your best. Setbacks are temporary, disappointment doesn’t last and enough courage can lift you out of anywhere. Don’t let any of the bends or detours change your belief in your own potential, and know that the entire Union community is behind you all the way.
