On Tuesday evening, 6 August, Union High School hosted the annual Interschools chess competition between Union and Volkskool.
A word of thanks is extended to everyone who attended the evening in support of the players as well as to Christopher-John Koopman who assisted in preparing the high school’s chess players for this encounter.
To start the evening, the captain of Union’s 1st team, Liano Naidoo, welcomed all those present. Mrs. Hanli Rose-Innes, who played anintegral part as the Master of Ceremonies, then ensured that everyone understood what was going to happen. The learners were all given 1 hour to play, with the last game (rightfully belonging to the two Union and Volkskool captains) ending with 5 minutes to spare.
At the end of the evening’s play, the Union matric team was crowned the victors of their section, beating Volkskool 13 – 11. Union High School’s Top 12 also outperformed their opponents, winning their section 22 – 2.
The primary department’s players started off well and in the lead, however, as the evening continued, suffered a lapse in concentration allowing Volkskool to win the section 13 – 17. This brought the final score (which, unfortunately, excludes the matric players’ wonderful performance) to stand at 35 – 19 in Union’s favour.
Special mention must be made of Union’s Top 6, who all won their games resulting in a an undefeated first team – definitely one for the books!
