UK Cricket Tour. After losing the toss at the picturesque Whitgift School grounds yesterday, Thursday, 20 June, the touring St Andrew’s College 1st XI found themselves in the field for their first UK Cricket Tour match. Roman van Zyl started with a wicket off the first ball of the game, and soon got his second, leaving Whitgift at 13/2. Two good partnerships and a flourish at the end saw Whitgift finish on 327/5, indeed an impressive performance after the early pressure exerted by College.
In the afternoon session, the College batsmen went about their task confidently and were always up with the rate. Following the loss of William Beamish for a well-played 57 that left the lower order to try and keep them in the game. Myles Sansom also played his hand with a well-constructed 76 off 76 balls. Unfortunately College were eventually bowled out for 268, going down by 59 runs.
Cricket is a game of small margins at this level. If a few chances had been taken, it may have ended very differently. Many thanks to Mr Neil Kendrick and Whitgift for their wonderful hospitality over the past two days.
Play starts at 11:30 am today against Cranleigh. – Mr Scott Jackson
