Traditional derby – Hilton College hosted Michaelhouse

Student Executive Committee. Hilton College – Upholding Tradition Ahead of the Derby.

Hilton College, KwaZulu-Natal, proudly hosted the Michaelhouse Student Executive Committee. and both schools’ war cry leaders for a special dinner. This is setting the tone for the much-anticipated traditional derby.

The gathering was more than a meal. It was a chance for fellowship, reflection, and shared responsibility as two brother schools reaffirmed their role in preserving this historic fixture.

In a gesture of goodwill, Hilton’s Head of School, James Peattie, presented Michaelhouse Head Prefect, Max Oliver, with a gift, extending best wishes for the day and assuring the Michaelhouse boys of a warm welcome on Hilton’s campus.

This cherished tradition shows both institutions are committed to sportsmanship, respect, and brotherhood. These principles that lie at the heart of South Africa’s great schools and their celebrated rivalries.

Derby Day through the eyes of two Head Boys

In their own words, the head boys of Hilton College and Michaelhouse reflect on the meaning and significance of a rivalry that has shaped generations of boys at both schools.

James Peattie | Head Boy, Hilton College:

“For more than 120 years, Hilton and Michaelhouse have shared a rich history shaped by tradition, respect, and a healthy rivalry. It helped define both schools. Our relationship has long been one of mutual influence and admiration, and our annual derby days remain a highlight because of what they represent beyond the scoreboard.

These encounters are about more than competition. They are a celebration of camaraderie, character, and schoolboy sport at its best – a time when boys commit fully to their teams while honouring the values their schools stand for.

Today, both Hilton and Michaelhouse are united in their commitment to playing in the true spirit of brotherhood, showcasing all that is good about schoolboy sport and the proud traditions we share.

That spirit does not soften the contest. Hilton boys will give everything on the field and Astros today, competing with passion and pride – and we expect nothing less from Michaelhouse. Together, we look forward to another memorable and meaningful chapter in this great rivalry.”

Max Oliva | Head Prefect | Michaelhouse:

“The boys of Michaelhouse love the opportunity to compete against our neighbours in one of the country’s oldest sporting derbies. This healthy rivalry and sportsmanship have endured for 122 years and remain as strong as ever. Our two schools also unite culturally to put on the “Two Schools in Concert” event. It showcases the musical and choral talent of both schools, and I always look forward to it.

All week, match‑day jerseys have been displayed from Michaelhouse dormitory windows, reflecting the growing excitement ahead of today’s clashes. These red banners are a reminder of the battles to be decided on the field on the weekend.

I speak for the boys when I say that, whether they’re donning the broad stripe, blocks, or the beloved red jersey, the passion is evident and isn’t a product of which team you play for but rather the pride of the badge that is worn over the hearts of every Michaelhouse man. There is no greater honour to bear that badge than against Hilton. They are our oldest rivals, with both fixtures being the highlight of every boy’s year.”
