On Saturday the 27 February, the St Charles College Environmental Council and Club, Service Council and Presidents boys began the building of a bridge in the Bisley Nature Reserve.
The bridge was originally planned to be constructed over three days. Thanks to the sponsorships of labour from Intaba Ridge, the Friends of Bisley Nature Reserve (FOBNR) committee and the youthful muscle and passion from the St Charles College boys, along with Mr Anthony, Mrs Steyn and Mr and Mrs Ivins – the bridge was completed in a day. The Chairperson of the FOBNR, Mr Peter West, shared the following with us; “I must commend Mr van Blerk on the exceptional caliber of all connected with the College. I speak on behalf of the FOBNR when I say what a pleasure it was to work with such an enthusiastic, courteous and happy bunch of young men.”
This opportunity has allowed the boys to gain valuable knowledge of nature, the environment and the importance of environmental conservation. The projects in the Bisley Nature Reserve are not done yet. There is a second bridge which needs to be renovated, some pathways needing clearing and bird hides needing fixing. Both the FOBNR and St Charles College are excited to be part of restoring the beauty of Bisley Nature Reserve. – Mr Sean Anthony
