The basketball clash between St Charles College and Maritzburg College is arguably the most anticipated game in the province, and the most recent instalment did not disappoint. In front of a capacity crowd, Maritzburg College looked to protect home court advantage. Recent years have seen the Saints team coming out on top, but Maritzburg College were determined to break the recent trend.
With a high paced attack and strong defence, College jumped on the young Saints team and built a healthy lead in the first quarter. The SCC team played hard throughout the first half but struggled to convert early opportunities and ultimately spent the half just trying to limit the damage. The third quarter was when St Charles College was able to turn the game around.
The strong defence throughout the game contributed to the change in momentum; however it was the short purple patch on offense which allowed the Saints to take the lead. There were some panicky moments towards the end of the game when Maritzburg College fouled in order to keep the game alive; however, the Saints were able to hold on for a narrow win, keeping their winning streak against College alive. Final score was St Charles College 44 – 41 Maritzburg College.
