Soccer Highway Derby. ⚽ Thrilling Derby Ends in Stalemate: Kearsney College vs Westville Boys’ High.
Kearsney College and Westville Boys’ High reignited their storied Highway derby in a fiercely contested soccer match that delivered high drama and top-tier schoolboy football. Westville entered the fixture brimming with confidence, having edged out Kearsney in their previous encounter earlier this season.
From the opening whistle, the atmosphere was electric, with both sides committed to an attacking brand of football. Kearsney struck first when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul in the box. Captain Sipho Majiza, playing his final match on the iconic Stott field, calmly converted to give the hosts a 1–0 lead.
Just before halftime, Kearsney’s Liam Oets nearly doubled the advantage, breaking through the defense for a one-on-one with the Westville keeper—only to be denied by a stunning save.
Westville responded early in the second half, leveling the score through a composed finish by Kwenama Hlubi. The intensity ramped up as the match entered its final 20 minutes. Kearsney regained the lead after a sweeping move down the left flank culminated in a pinpoint cross, met by Kaydon Mulder’s powerful header.
With time running out, Westville pressed hard and capitalized when Kearsney were reduced to 10 men. Captain Joel Munemo seized a late opportunity to bring the visitors back on level terms at 2–2.
In the dying moments, Kearsney thought they had snatched a winner as the ball found the back of the net—only for the referee to rule it out due to a foul in the build-up, adding a final twist to an already dramatic encounter.
The match concluded in a 2–2 draw, showcasing the passion and talent that define this historic rivalry.
