Sharks Rugby Day fixture. Kearsney College 1st XV vs Michaelhouse 1st XV.
Saturday saw the Kearsney College 1st XV travel to Hilton for their Sharks Rugby Day fixture against a highly rated Michaelhouse side.
The hosts made a blistering start, crossing for tries in the 3rd and 13th minutes to establish a 12–3 lead, with Kearsney’s only reply a penalty from Daniel Miskey.
Kearsney showed composure and resilience to claw their way back. After earning a penalty and kicking to the corner, the visitors executed a superb driving maul, with captain Nhlanhla Ndlovu crashing over. Miskey’s conversion narrowed the gap to 12–10 at halftime.
The second half began perfectly for Kearsney as Miskey slotted a long-range 45‑metre penalty to give his side the lead for the first time, 13–12. Michaelhouse struck back almost immediately with a try in the corner from a clever change-of-direction move.
Brilliant counter-attacking play
Kearsney refused to be rattled. Brilliant counter-attacking play saw Ndlovu break the line before releasing Lwandle Mkhize in the corner. Moments later, incisive handling allowed Lwazi Mbebe to slice through and link with Oliver Ludwig, who finished near the posts. Miskey converted to stretch the lead to 25–19 with 20 minutes remaining.
Momentum swung again when a lost Kearsney lineout gifted Michaelhouse a converted try under the posts, reclaiming the lead at 26–25 with nine minutes left.
But the visitors responded with determination. In the 63rd minute, Luke Grobbelaar finished off a blindside scrum move in the corner, and Miskey nailed a magnificent touchline conversion to restore Kearsney’s lead at 32–26.
Michaelhouse mounted one last assault, scoring from a quick-tap penalty. Crucially, the conversion attempt drifted wide, leaving Kearsney ahead 32–31. With the final play, Miskey kicked into touch to seal a thrilling victory.
Played at a relentless pace, the contest was a superb advert for schoolboy rugby, with the lead changing hands repeatedly and both sides showcasing skill, courage, and ambition.
