School Rugby. Rugby Thunder in Maritzburg: Wild Dogs Triumph on Derby Day
On a crisp winter’s afternoon that felt anything but cold, Pietermaritzburg buzzed with anticipation as St Charles College locked horns with St David’s Marist Inanda in a thrilling schoolboy rugby showdown. This wasn’t just another fixture — it was the debut of King Price Derby Day, and Old Orchards Field had never looked better. With the sun shining, stands packed, and SuperSport Channel 216 cameras rolling, the stage was set for drama, grit, and glory.
The Hype Before the Hit
Both sides rolled in with confidence and firepower. St David’s, steered by rugby royalty in former Springbok and Old Boy Etienne Fynn, were riding high after two emphatic wins and looked to shake things up away from home. But jet-lag and unfamiliar soil are cruel opponents, and the Blue & Gold of St Charles were not in the mood to hand out welcomes. Playing on their fortress of a field, and cheered on by a home crowd in full voice, the Wild Dogs were ready to bite.
First Half Fireworks
With the whistle barely gone, St Charles went into hunting mode. Every carry, every hit, every contest screamed intensity. The coaches called for domination in the first 10 — the players gave them 14 minutes of destruction. Storming to a 12-0 lead, the Wild Dogs had the visitors scrambling. Their early cushion turned into a launchpad for bold, expansive rugby. Some moves dazzled, others missed the mark — but the ambition was fearless. The halftime hooter found the scoreboard still reading 12-0, and the home side had barely scratched the surface.
Defence Turns to Offence
After the break, St David’s came out swinging. But what met them was a blue-and-gold wall. Tackles thudded, rucks were ferocious, and every attacking spark was smothered before it could ignite. St Charles didn’t just defend — they counterpunched. Turnovers turned into attacks, pressure turned into points. Each play fed the momentum until the scoreboard read 34-6 and the final whistle confirmed it: dominance complete.
More Than Just a Game
Beyond the scoreline, this was a celebration of school spirit, sporting excellence, and the sheer joy of rugby. St Charles College extends sincere gratitude to St David’s for their sportsmanship and competitive edge — both key ingredients in making the inaugural King Price Derby Day unforgettable.
Best wishes to the lads from Inanda for the rest of 2025 and the road to 2026. If this match is anything to go by, schoolboy rugby in South Africa is alive and roaring. Reported by Head Coach, Craig Dwyer
