SADSAA Bottomfish Interprovincial tournament – Pearson High

SADSAA Bottomfish Interprovincial tournament. Pearson High School Anglers Reel in Silver at National Bottomfish Tournament.

Pia Berg and Michael Swart, two talented young anglers from Pearson High School in Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha, proudly represented the Eastern Province U.19 A team at the prestigious SADSAA Bottomfish Interprovincial Tournament, held in Kleinbaai from 9–12 July 2025.

Braving the Elements

Despite facing challenging weather conditions and navigating large ocean swells, the Eastern Province A team showcased remarkable skill and determination. Their efforts paid off as they secured 2nd place overall, earning Silver Medals in a fiercely competitive field of provincial teams.

🐟 What Is Bottomfish Angling?

Bottomfish angling is a specialized form of deep-sea fishing that targets species dwelling near the ocean floor. These include prized catches such as:

  • Red Roman
  • Black Musselcracker
  • Geelbek (Cape Salmon)
  • Kob
  • Rockcod
  • Yellowbelly Rockcod

Anglers typically use baited hooks dropped to depths ranging from 20 to over 100 meters, often in rocky reef areas where bottomfish also congregate. The sport requires precision, patience, and a deep understanding of marine habitats.

About the Tournament

The South African Deep Sea Angling Association (SADSAA) hosts this annual interprovincial event to promote competitive angling among youth as well as to develop future Protea-level talent. The 2025 edition in Kleinbaai brought together top junior anglers from across the country, each team consisting of three members. Points were awarded based on species caught, size, and adherence to conservation rules, including catch-and-release practices for certain fish.

A Rising Tide of Talent

Pia and Michael’s selection to the Eastern Province team is also a testament to their dedication and growing reputation in the angling community. Their performance in Kleinbaai not only earned them medals but also placed them on the radar for future national representation.

🎓 Pearson High School’s Legacy

Pearson High continues to foster excellence in both academics and extracurriculars, with its students making waves—literally—in national sporting arenas. The school community celebrates Pia and Michael’s achievement as a proud moment for Eastern Cape youth angling.
