SA Pipe Band Solo. St Andrew’s College, Grahamstown – Pipe Band Report.
This past weekend, on September 13th, a select group of drummers from St Andrew’s College travelled to Johannesburg to compete in the prestigious SA Pipe Band Solo Drumming Championships. The championships were hosted at St Benedict’s College. This elite event draws the finest soloists from across the country. The level of musicianship, composure, and talent displayed by the drummers was truly commendable.
Kwaleyela Imenda competed in the Tenor Novice March section and delivered an outstanding performance, earning 3rd place nationally in his category. His exceptional flourishing and craftsmanship on the tenor drum also marked a proud milestone in the Pipe Band’s history.
Tristan Ssekimpi also took part in the Junior MSR section, which featured the highest calibre of school-level competitors. Although he narrowly missed a podium finish, Tristan’s remarkable skill and experience as a soloist shone through. His dedication and artistry continue to inspire future generations of drummers at St Andrew’s, embodying the College’s values with distinction.
Mr Potgieter also competed and successfully defended his title as the reigning South African Champion, reaffirming his position as the top solo drummer in the country.
This championship marks a pivotal moment for the Pipe Band. These achievements signal the beginning of a new era—one defined by excellence, ambition, and a renewed cultural spirit that will shape the band for years to come.
