President’s Awards. Sduduzo Mtalane and Carlo van den Berg from St Charles College in Pietermaritzburg, received their President’s Awards. Sduduzo received his silver award and is working towards gold, and Carlo van den Berg received his gold award.
The Award is also known as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and is run by the President’s Award in South Africa. Some boys receive awards after volunteering to participate in physical activities and learning new skills, before completing an expedition. Boys can receive a bronze, silver or gold certificate depending on the activities done.
The award programme encourages personal discovery, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility, and service to the community in the hope of developing self-belief and independence in its participants. It also aims to teach them a sense of responsibility towards others, as well as life skills such as negotiation and problem-solving.
