Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School held its Sport Awards Ceremony recently with numerous learners being acknowledged for their outstanding achievements not only in the sporting codes offered at the school, but also in those not offered at the school.
The Junior All-round Sport Award went to Olivia Woodburn. She was recognised for her outstanding performance in Cross Country, Swimming, Indoor Hockey, Squash, Soccer, Water Polo and Hockey. She was selected for the KZN Inland U14A Hockey Team and achieved a Gold Medal at the SA Canoeing Inter-schools’ River Championship.
The Phumzile Gumede Award for a committed and unassuming sportswoman went to Rebecca Munitich. Rebecca won this award for representing Girls’ High in Swimming, Hockey (2nd Team),as well as the 1st Tennis and 1st Water Polo Teams.
Gemma Cox won the Gia Cousins Trophy for achievement, sportsmanship and service. In her role as Games Secretary she served the Sport Department with distinction. She represented Girls’ High with integrity and sportsmanship in the 2nd Tennis, 1st Squash, 1st Indoor Hockey and 1st Hockey Teams. She captained the KZN U18B Inland Hockey Team at the National Tournament.
Kayla Klaasen was the recipient of the Taryn de Winnaar Trophy for perseverance and commitment. She was recognized for being a committed member of the First Aid Society, 3rd Tennis, 2nd Hockey, 2nd Basketball, 1st Squash, and 1st Indoor Hockey Teams.
The top award, the Val Fowler Trophy for Outstanding Senior Sportwoman went to Maria Diedrick. Maria walked away with the U19 Victrix Ludorum for Swimming, Best Soccer player and Best Water Polo player. She represented Girls’ High with integrity and pride in the 2nd Hockey Team, the Swimming Team, and she Captained the 1st Soccer Team.
Maria represented KwaZulu-Natal at the National Water Polo Championship, as well as being selected for the South African U18 Water Polo Team to compete at the World Cup Qualifying Tournament.
With the Head of Sport at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School, Charmaine Koekemoer, are the top six achievers for 2018.
