Ameerah, at what age did you start playing netball?
- I started playing netball at the age of 8 at Curro Aurora and Hillfox indoor netball sports arena.
Are you truly passionate about netball? Why?
- Yes, I’m truly passionate about netball as it is a sport that can brings together not only a nation, but also the world. Netball has a close, special place to my heart as my mom used to play the sport. Through having my mom coach me, I developed a deep love and passion with regard to everything that the sport encompasses.
Do you participate in other sports as well?
- Yes, I participate in other sports as well. I consider myself to be quite well rounded in the sports field. I participate in not only netball but also softball, football and swimming.
What position are you currently playing? Have you played any other positions in the past?
- I am currently playing in the Goal Attack position. Through my many years of netball, I have played in almost all the other positions as well. My favourite, by far, has to be goal attack but I consider myself very lucky to have been able to experience all the other positions which has deepened my appreciation for the sport.
Have you been captain of a netball team before? To what degree?
- Yes, I have been captain of the netball team before – specifically being last year and also in grades 5 to 7. I am currently still fulfilling the position of being the 2024 netball captain. This role is a very honourable one as I have the privilege of encouraging my team to play to the best of their abilities and watching all my players grow overtime.
During which game, as Netball Captain, did you stress the most? Why?
- One of the most memorable stressful games I have experienced was Tyger Valley 2024. Prior to playing the match, I received some disappointing news regarding the selection of provincial teams. I carried this disappointment into our games. It became very evident as every time I missed a goal, I was filled with a crippling feeling of not being good enough and letting not only myself, but also my team down.
Do you have any goals you’d like to achieve in the current season?
- My goals this current season include working towards my team and making it to playoffs. This would not only be a great achievement but would definitely boost team morale and bring us together as a team. As a final year matric, another important goal I have is to make this the best season possible with my teammates. This not only means performing well on the court, but also speaks to our interactions and time spent off the court.
Do you plan to continue with netball after your school career? If so, at what level?
- Yes, I do plan to continue with netball after my schooling career. I would love to play for one of the universities. Also High Performance sides and to eventually play for TNL. Additionally, one day, I hope to move to an SA side and make my mom and country proud.
Which school, if any, do you consider your strongest opponent?
- Through my netballing career, I have played against many schools, all of which vary in strength. In the 2024 season I expect for Kings School Robin Hills to give our team a run for their money. This being due to a very tough game played last year where we managed to scrape a win of 18-17.
What are you doing, as Netball Captain, to keep your team motivated?
- Well, as the captain, I try to keep my team motivated by setting clear goals and celebrating their achievements. I also make sure to communicate openly, listen to their ideas, and provide support when needed. It’s important to create a positive and encouraging environment for everyone on the team!
Is there a coach or netball player you currently look up to as a role model and why?
- One of my coaches that I’ve looked up to is Coach and player, Bongi Msomi. Bongi Msomi, South African former netball player, is a role model because she is an incredible athlete and leader. She has shown dedication, skill, and determination in her sport, inspiring others to pursue their dreams. Bongi’s passion and positive attitude make her a great role model for aspiring netball players coming up.
What was your biggest netball nightmare/experience during a game? If any.
- During one of my indoor netball games, I landed badly and twisted my ankle. I was struggling to play, but I had a tournament in 3 days. I went to the physio, and I was warned not to play but I couldn’t let my team down. I played a 6-day tournament on a torn ATFL. After my tournament my ankle was in such bad condition, I thought I would’ve been out for my 2023 school netball season which was a total nightmare.
Ameerah, what have you learned about teamwork since becoming captain?
- As a captain, I’ve learned so much about the power of teamwork. It’s not just about individual skills, but about how we come together as a unit. Communication is key! We need to be open and honest with each other, sharing our thoughts and ideas. Trust is also crucial. When we trust and rely on each other, we can accomplish great things. And let’s not forget about support. We should always have each other’s backs, offering encouragement and assistance when a player needs it. Together, we’re stronger, and that’s what makes teamwork so amazing!

Another highlight was witnessing the growth and development of each team member. Seeing them improve their skills and gain confidence was truly rewarding. Lastly, the bond and camaraderie we’ve built as a team is something I cherish. We’ve become like a family, supporting and motivating each other through thick and thin. These highlights have made my journey as a captain unforgettable.
What was the best advice you’ve ever received from your coach/s?
- One of the best pieces of advice I received from a coach was to always give my best effort and never give up, no matter the circumstances. Such moments make playing netball truly unforgettable.
Which match has been your toughest match so far in your career?
- One of the toughest games I’ve played was against Redford House at playoffs. It was a nail-biter from start to finish. The competition was fierce, and both teams were giving it their all. Every possession, every shot, and every defensive play mattered. The pressure was intense, but it brought out the best in us. We had to dig deep, stay focused, and rely on our training and teamwork. Despite the challenges, we never gave up. And that’s what makes netball such an amazing game.
If you were to be a kitchen article, what would you be? Why?
- If I were a kitchen item, I’d be a trusty chef’s knife. Like a chef’s knife, I’m adaptable and reliable, ready to tackle any challenge that comes my way. With my sharp thinking and creativity, I aim to bring precision and efficiency to everything I do. Just like a chef’s knife, I’m always here to lend a hand and make things easier.
