Michaelmas Cricket Week. Michaelmas Week got off to a thrilling start for the St Charles College First XI on home soil, with two captivating encounters showcasing grit, talent, and team spirit.
Day One: vs Paul Roos Gymnasium
St Charles College welcomed formidable opposition from the Cape Province at Paul Roos Gymnasium. After losing the toss, the Blue and Gold were asked to bat under testing conditions. The top order showed glimpses of promise but struggled to build momentum, losing wickets at regular intervals.
A pivotal partnership between youngsters Caleb Sharp (56) and Ryan Clarke (78 off 73 balls) brought stability and class to the innings, laying a solid foundation in the middle overs. Their composure and strokeplay turned the tide, setting the stage for a late flourish. The final push came courtesy of the two Connors — Simpson and Vogt — who added a crucial 40 runs for the 10th wicket, lifting the total to a competitive 249 all out in the 48th over.
In response, Paul Roos began confidently, but the resilience and discipline of the Saints’ bowling attack soon took center stage. Connor Vogt led the charge with a superb spell, claiming 3 wickets, while Keegan Vermaak bowled with precision and control to finish with 2 for 41. The Blue and Gold held their nerve in the closing stages to secure a memorable 26-run victory — a fitting start to their Michaelmas campaign.
Day Two: vs King Edward VII School (KES)
Day Two brought more favorable batting conditions, and KES capitalized after winning the toss and electing to bat. Their experienced top order absorbed early pressure before accelerating through the middle overs. Despite disciplined bowling and spirited fielding from the youthful Saints side, a few missed chances proved costly as KES posted a daunting 317.
Faced with a steep chase, St Charles College responded with intent and belief. Openers Zama and Prinsloo laid a positive foundation, followed by another fluent knock from Ryan Clarke (30 off 30). The highlight of the innings came from Connor Simpson, who delivered one of the finest performances seen on the Oval in recent memory — a masterful 87 off 80 balls, blending timing, power, and composure under pressure.
The Blue and Gold fought valiantly until the final overs, falling just short in a high-quality contest that saw nearly 600 runs scored. The 44-run margin flattered the visitors, but the character, effort, and unity displayed by the St Charles College team were nothing short of exceptional. By Head Coach, Divan van Wyk
