KZN Rugby and Hockey. St Charles College, Pietermaritzburg, played rugby and hockey vs Michaelhouse, KZN MIdlands, this past weekend. It was a sunny but cool day in Balgowan.
In the 1st Hockey match, Michaelhouse got onto the score card early on with a drag flick into the left side of the goal. Other than that breakthrough, the 1st half was relatively even and conservative. Both sides defended well.
The second half was more entertaining with both teams putting together some good passages of play. The boys in Blue and Gold equalised with a well worked short corner routine. Wandile Gcuma scored with a flick into the left netting to put the Saints back on level terms with the hosts. From then on, both teams were looking to capitalise off the others’ mistakes, however, both goalkeepers remained relatively unchallenged. The hosts did manage to sneak one past the goalie, and then another, in quick succession. The Saints came close to scoring on three different occasions late in the game, which made for an exciting conclusion. Ultimately, they weren’t able to convert, and the score remained 3 – 1 at the final whistle.
The Saints 1st XV took to Meadows field for the final domestic game of the 2022 season. The first half was full of running rugby, with both teams playing an entertaining brand. The hosts capitalised on their chances while the visitors did everything but move the scoreboard; until a driving maul saw try-scoring machine, Matthew Urquhart cross the whitewash. At half time, Michaelhouse were in a comfortable position, leading by four tries to one. The Saints have a reputation for never giving up, and they threw caution to the wind, attacking from all areas of the field. The Michaelhouse defence stood strong and when they did gain possession, they were clinical in moving the ball wide and stretching the Saints.
The Blue & Gold faithful supporters stuck by their brothers, as they have all season, in big numbers and full voice; however, the hosts were stronger on the day and ran in a further 4 tries, with the Saints only able to reply through hooker Urquhart, his second of the day and twelfth of the season.
