As a matric learner of the class of 2020, leader of the RCL and a participant of multiple sport codes at Kathu High school, my heart is bleeding today.
I could never imagine that Interschools 2019 would have been my last as I was only gr 11 and the best was surely yet to come. Since grade 8 I’ve always dreamed of playing interschools and dreamed about saying that this, interschools 2020, would be the last one, the best one, the most memorable… But as the world is battling Covid 19, we as matrics are mourning a time which should have been one of the greatest of all at HSK.
Exactly 1 year ago I participated in, what now seems to be, my last interschools against Kalahari High School. That the past Thursday evening would have been our last interschools build up. The one night which always seemed to bring all our learners together like nothing else could. Whether you’re a player or just a proud supporter of the teams of Kathu High. Not just the learners but the town as a whole came together as one union. It was all anyone could speak about weeks before. An indescribable spirit covered the school and its supporters.
On the night of big brag my heart always pounded out of my chest. When you walked through that soaring crowd, knowing that on Saturday you are going to fight for the most important win for your team, a win for every supporter on the side of the field but most importantly a win to make the school proud. Knowing that every single practice, every drop of blood, sweat, tears and pain you’ve put in… It all comes down to those 60 short minutes representing HSK on that very important day.
The moments before the match, the chills you get when shaking the hand of your principal and finally the relieving sound of the end whistle. Tears streaming down your cheeks as you know that this is the end of the road as this phase of your life is truly coming to an end.
Those were the dreams of us Matrics of 2020. Memories we dreamed of making, now only a distant reality.
As RCL members, we’ve sat years before dreaming up what we as a group would plan and organise for one the biggest nights of the year. How we would simply put in EVERYTHING to make it as memorable as possible, contributing to what was build as a school tradition over the years and leaving our mark as matrics for many years to come. Everyone putting in the work, all with only one vision in mind… Bringing the cup home.
To all the friendships we’ve built on and off the fields, each and everyone doing their part, contributing to the one vision we all shared. Uncertain if I, as matriculant, will ever have the honour to play my last match as a learner of Kathu High School, I want to thank Kathu HS for investing in not only my dreams, but our dreams as learners. That we always could’ve find a way to share some joy and making every memory, on and off the field, so remarkably special.
Matrics 2020, this might be a tough day and even tougher year, but Matrics 2020 will be known as the strongest and most enduring group of all.
HSK we thank you. We salute you!
