International PI (π) Day – On Thuesday, 14th March Curro Durbanville High School’s staff brought homemade pies to celebrate International PI (π) Day. Before the pies could be devoured by hungry teachers the school’s devoted receptionists, Tannie Johanna, Tannie Karlien and Consumer Studies teacher, Ms Nelia Steenekamp also had to taste and judge all the yummy pies for International PI (π) Day.
The winning pie was a Masala Beef Pie made by Ms Marlize Marais! Not only can the staff teach, but they can bake too.
The following pies were thoroughly enjoyed:
- Apple Crumble Pie,
- Rhubarb Pie,
- Chocolate Ganache with Peanut Brittle,
- Cookie Dough Pie,
- Baked Apple Pie, Peach Pie,
- Pumpkin Pie,
- Pumpkin and Feta Pie,
- Chicken Pies,and
- Masala Beef Pie.
Here are some facts on why International Pi (π) Day is celebrated:
14 March is known as International Pi Day because the numerical date 3/14 is the same as Pi – 3,14.
- Pi is also an irrational number, meaning its digits go on infinitely without repeating.
- Pi (π), is the 16th letter of the Greek alphabet.
- Pi is a mathematical constant, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. The length around the outside of a circle is also approximately 3,14 in width.
- 14 March is also the birthday of Albert Einstein.
- The first Pi Day was also celebrated in San Francisco in 1988.
