ICF World Ocean Racing. Camps Bay High School Grade 10 learner, Holly Smith, has been selected to represent South Africa at the ICF World Ocean Racing Championships. It will be held in Portugal in October.
Holly earned her green and gold colours whilst competing in the SA Surf Ski Championships. Above all it was on her 16th birthday. After a great start Holly managed to stay on the bunch of senior ladies for 5km into a strong head wind. She fell off the bunch but managed to stay in sight of the top ladies competitor. She turned the buoy at Partridge Point near Cape Point after 9km of paddling. Then she had a fantastic 14km downwind paddle (ideal conditions for Holly) to finish at Fish Hoek beach where there was strong wind and a big swell.
Holly finished First U16, second U18 and seventh Lady Overall. With her Second Place in the U18 Category, she earned her place on the SA U23 Team. She will now race in the World Ocean Racing Championships to be held in Portugal.
Said Busi Ngcwama, Head of Sport at Camps Bay High School, “Holly puts in long hours of training every week. These efforts have yielded the results she has been dreaming of! We are incredibly proud of her and wish her all the best for the World Ocean Racing Championships and her future competitions. Camps Bay High is supporting her all the way!”
