Honours Award for Service. Aiden Wood, student from St Andrew’s College in Grahamstown, has set an example of diverse involvement. He has also contributed significantly to a multitude of cultural activities.
Aiden is a skilled actor and performer. He has performed and written for the DSG PlayFest. He also acted in and directed the Mullins play for Interhouse Plays. Furthermore Aiden played a lead role in Cabaret earlier this year. He was awarded Colours for Dramatics last year. He also holds a Merit Award for Debating, having been an active and convincing debater since his Grade 8 year.
Organisational skills
His organisational skills have contributed to a variety of activities: he has been an active and generous member of the Plato Society, Copernicans, Astronomers and Speakers, as well as completing the Ignite philosophy course in his Grade 10 year. Aiden was involved with organising the 2024 Philosothon. He has also been a Co-Section leader in Drill Squad this year, a member of the Cultural Committee and achieved his Proficiency Tie. His diverse involvement shows multifaceted talent and creativity.
Although Aiden only joined the Chamber Choir in his Grade 11 year, he has been a dedicated member and showed his peers that it is never too late to start something new. He completed his President’s Award Gold Standard in his Grade 11 year as well.
Aiden initiated the reintroduction of rowing as a sport at DSG and was Vice-captain of College rowing for three years. In his role as Academic Portfolio Prefect, he reintroduced a peer tutoring system, which has gained traction in some of the houses, and he, along with Tom Clucas and Murray Wilson, raised the profile of academics with the introduction of the Academic Honours blazer. He gets things done!
Enriched the lives of others
Aiden’s involvement has enriched the lives of others, as so much of his involvement involves service to others. He has served as a Library Monitor since Grade 10 and organised a fundraising movie evening. He has also regularly been involved in Community Engagement projects. In addition to all this diverse involvement, Aiden’s service to First Aid, and to his peers in his role as a first aider, is significant. He has spent over 170 hours waiting to help others and often runs off the field from his own rugby game to take up the role of first aider. He has served as First Aid Captain this year and the San Sisters applaud his leadership, his dedication to first aid and his organisational skills, particularly his management of the rostering of first aiders. Hi
Aiden has set an example of how to extract the most from the opportunities available at College, while serving and contributing through involvement. He has also supported others and encouraged them in their contribution.
For his diverse involvement, demonstrating significant skill and service in so many areas, Aiden is a deserving recipient of the prestigious CEMA Honours for Service. – Mrs Kate Cobbing
