Hockey Captain – Meet Beatice Ncube Curro Roodeplaat 1st team

Hockey Captain. I started playing hockey at the young age of nine years. I like hockey because it is a fun sport to play. My friends used to force me to play with them.

My favourite professional hockey player is Quinita Bobbs. She inspired me to continue playing when I felt like giving up. Quinita is a South African hockey player of the South African National team.

The position I am currently playing is centre or middle link. I’ve also played centre or middle link centre forward, goalie and both wings.

The first time I was elected Hockey Captain was in 2019 when I was in Grade 3. In my opinion the greatest task of the captain – on the field and during training, is Checking up on all the players and making sure everyone is getting along.

The prowess/qualities I think a good hockey player should possess is patience, leadership and friendliness.

The thing that inspires me every time I step onto the hockey field for a game is my dream of playing for any team internationally in the future.

The game I can remember that was most fun in my hockey career up to now, was one of my last games in 2019.  I played as goalie and we won with a score of like 4 to 0 or something like that. The game I don’t want to remember was one of last year’s games. I learnt that we needed more communication as a team and a lot of fitness.

Handling pressure during a hockey game is that I experience, most of the time, pressure turns into adrenaline!

As Hockey Captain, I motivate my team by making sure we help each other when mistakes are made.

My advice for beginners in the game of hockey is to be patient with yourself and practice makes perfect.

After school I would like to continue playing hockey professionally or just as a hobby. Besides playing hockey, I also play netball and I run track.

My coach and teammates would describe me as hardworking and an over competitive hockey player.

The coach or hockey player I look up to as a role model is my coach, Ms Suléne Steenkamp and as a player, it must be Quanita Bobbs.

The professional hockey player I would  like to have coffee with is Quanita Bobbs.
