Hibbert Shield. Paul Roos’s first hockey team is experiencing an unprecedented season. They have won all 18 encounters in which they have been involved scoring a massive 71 goals and only conceding 9.
This winning streak was carried through to the fourth edition of the Hibbert Shield hosted by Grey High in Gqeberha. It took place during the long weekend of 25 – 27 April. The team progressed through their pool games and faced their toughest competition of the year against Durban High Schools in the quarter-final. However, the men in maroon’s fitness and clinical approach proved too much for the Durban side. Paul Roos walked away victorious winning 3 – 2. They also faced Selborne College in the semi-final and after a convincing 4 – 0 victory moved on to face old rivals, SACS in the final.
The final that arguably saw the two best sides in the country face-off, was a very even affair. SACS took the lead early, but Paul Roos fought back and managed to clinch the winner. PRG secured a penalty corner in the last minute of the game to win 3-2.
Head coach Ashlin Freddy ascribes the team’s successes to the success of the hockey programme. It has taken years to perfect and the depth that Paul Roos hockey boasts.
The u16A side took part in the first u16 version of the tournament. The team earned a commendable fourth place in the inaugural Hibbert Cup hosted by Pearson High School.
