Head of the Charles Regatta. St Andrew’s College, Grahamstown, has proudly sent a contingent of rowers to compete in one of the world’s most prestigious rowing events. The Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) is held annually on the Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the regatta. It runs from October 17–19 and features over 2,600 entries from 850 clubs across the globe.
The St Andrew’s crew arrived early to acclimate and spent two intensive days training on the Charles River. Despite initial cold and wet conditions, the weather has since cleared, offering crisp autumn sunshine and ideal rowing conditions. The riverbanks are now buzzing with energy as teams from around the world arrive. The course is being finalized, and excitement is building toward race day.
Historic stretch of water
Rowing on this historic stretch of water has been a transformative experience for the young athletes. The Charles River, flanked by Boston and Cambridge, is not only scenic. It is also technically challenging, with sharp turns and bridges. It tests the skill and coordination of even the most seasoned rowers. Sharing the water with elite crews—including national champions, collegiate powerhouses, and Olympic hopefuls—has provided invaluable exposure and inspiration.
The Head of the Charles is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of rowing excellence. Events span multiple categories including junior, collegiate, masters, and elite divisions, and the regatta is sanctioned by USRowing. Spectators line the riverbanks, and festivities include hospitality tents, merchandise booths, and even a 60th birthday bash for the regatta itself.
For St Andrew’s College, participating in HOCR is a testament to the school’s growing reputation in international rowing circles. It reflects the dedication of its athletes and coaches, and the strength of its rowing program. As the crews prepare to take to the water, they carry not only their oars but the pride of their school and country.
