Head Boy 2024. Like previous years, Schools That Rock interviewed Head Leaders of High Schools in South Africa. Today’s candidate interviewed is Oratile Raphuthing from Curro Somerset West.
Oratile, tell us more about yourself and your leadership? What is your leadership experience?
- My name is Oratile Raphuthing and I’m a learner and Head Boy at Curro Somerset West. I am a simple person who wants only to help others when they acquire help. And me being a leader in the school, I also feel it is my duty and responsibility to be a role model to those in lower grades and to be the example with how I lead the school to only great things.
What are your personal goals for the this year?
- As Head Boy 2024, I want to leave this school, with people in the school saying that I was the best Head Boy they’d ever had, due to my high determination, dedication and commitment to the school.
Tell us about your goals for Curro Somerset West for your term of service?
- This year I’d really love to have the school exposed more to the outside world. Like sports events/friendlies that aren’t limited to our district.
What were the biggest challenges you experienced as a learner of your school?
- Academically I am not the strongest person. And the pressure of having to perform especially since I’m a Head Boy is what will also challenge me the most this year.
What stands out most to you at Curro Somerset West?
- The community at school is a stand out for me. No one is ever left out. The children in all grades all have their own groups and no one is ever left alone and isolated.
Who do you look up to for inspiration or mentorship?
- My father is the biggest inspiration I have in my life. He mentors me currently and he also teaches me the correct way of being a responsible and respectful man in this dark world.
Oratile, you’re a kitchen article? What are you and why?
- I’m a toaster. When people see the bread before the toaster I look like I’m soft but the toast comes out hard as I’m a tough cookie.
How would your friends describe you?
- Funny, confident, hardworking, dedicated, generous, caring and also passionate.
What motivates you to achieve your goals?
- People around me give me fuel, their belief in me to achieve what I’m aiming for plays a big part in my success.
Why would you advise learners to also become part of Curro Somerset West?
- The feeling of being involved in your school brings a huge sense of gratification and joy to one as you feel good about doing something that not only benefits you but your entire school.
Who is your favourite teacher and why?
- Mrs Sindie Fourie. She has always been one teacher that was there for me when I needed someone the most. She’s also seen my highest highs and lowest lows. Mrs Sindie Fourie is someone I can easily talk to and also get the best advice possible from.
Oratile, what are your future goals? I’d love, once I’m done with school, to have some role in politics, not necessarily being a member in parliament.
