Head Boy 2024. Like in previous years, Schools That Rock interview Head Leaders of High Schools in South Africa. Today we chat with Unathi Raborife, Head Boy 2024 from Curro Kathu.
Unathi, tell us more about yourself and your leadership.
- I am a very open-minded person. I love working hard, not only to do my best but also to achieve the impossible sometimes even if I fail. I am the type of leader that takes the responsibility of the team on my shoulders. I believe as a leader you have to work harder than everyone else on the team.
What are your personal goals for this year?
- My most important goal for this year is to work so hard that I could feel proud of myself at the end of the year. In academies I want to get better grades, and, in my sport, I would definitely love to make a provincial team towards next year.
Tell us more about your goals for Curro Kathu for your term of service?
- As Head Boy 2024, I want to ensure that everyone has a good time and help the teachers maintain the discipline. To also do my part in the RCL so we can achieve our goals as a team.
What were the biggest challenges you experienced as a learner of your school?
- Getting to understand everyone and to have a genuine relationship with them.
What stands out most to you at Curro Kathu?
- That even though we may not have the numbers, we can still do great things. Also like how determined everyone is going from educators to students. And along with, how much progress the school has made over the years.
Who do you look up to for inspiration or mentorship?
- Carles Puyol. He was a leader who cared about the main goal of the team, not how much fun the team was having nor how much the opposition got humiliated. He focused on achieving what he wanted to achieve, and he was very respectful.
Unathi, you’re a kitchen article? What are you and why?
- A bowl, because everything people throw or say at me, I tend to keep the lessons from all of that and mix into something beneficial for me in future situations.
How would your friends describe you?
- They would say that I am not a perfect friend, but I try my best to be there for them. I am very protective. I am tolerated most of the time and I am a loving person.
What motivates you to achieve your goals?
- My family, blood related and not, they always tell that they believe in me and that I can achieve anything too. Because of that they made me to believe that I can do it, that I can achieve all my dreams.
Why would you advise learners to also become part of Curro Kathu?
- Because we are not a lot of students and that means you won’t be left out. You can get to know everyone and be part of a family. Yes, it won’t be a perfect family but it’s a family that will support and help you to become the best version of yourself.
Who is your favourite teacher and why?
- Mr Thabo, because over the years people have called me his son and I won’t disagree. I have known him since grade 7 and we didn’t have a good understanding at first, but over the years he has motivated me, believed in me, shouted at me. Always wanting the best for me and that’s why he is my favourite.
What are your future goals?
- To go study at a university, pursue my rugby dreams and finally get my parents the dream house they always wanted.
